Parental Control: How Much Is Enough?
This article in PC Magazine by Neil Rubenking is worth a read of you’re concerned about letting your children go online and are unsure of how to prevent them from encountering some of the nasties we hear about so often.
Here are some of the highlights:
Various types of “control” include:
- Want to limit your child’s IM buddies and record their chats? Choose a product with IM control
- Suspect your kid of illicit activities? Then select a product that installs secretly and logs everything
- If your biggest concern is accidental viewing of pornographic images, seek one that detects and blocks images of naked people
Most effective: Moms and their children should understand which online activities can be dangerous and talk together about what kind of Internet use is acceptable. Open communication will give them protection no software can offer. Kids who talk with their parents about online interactions that bother them won’t be cyber-bullied (and won’t be cyber-bullies either).
